class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s take a journey back to middle school.\u00a0 Reach into the depths of your brain to find the periodic table.\u00a0 The periodic table is a chart of elements.\u00a0 Elements are building blocks for everything: trees, rocks, gases, skin, and food.\u00a0 Everything is made up of elements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fluorine is an element and fluoride is the ionic (active) form\nof fluorine.&nbsp; Most ions do not like\nfloating around by themselves.&nbsp; They bind\nwith other ions to create molecules which are more stable.&nbsp; For example, oxygen is not often found by\nitself.&nbsp; It binds to another oxygen\nelement to form an oxygen molecule. &nbsp;Fluorine is a very special element.&nbsp; It has the highest electronegativity of any\nof the ions, forming strong ionic bonds.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are you bored yet?&nbsp;\nLet me get to the point.&nbsp; Why is\nfluoride important in the dental field?&nbsp; To\nanswer this, I must explain what enamel is.&nbsp;\nEnamel is the hardest substance in our bodies and is the white covering\nof our teeth.&nbsp; Enamel, like anything\nelse, is made up of elements, such as calcium, phosphorus, and hydrogen.&nbsp; When our mouth becomes acidic after eating or\ndrinking, the enamel releases hydroxide into the mouth to help bind the acidic\nions and bring the mouth back to a neutral environment.&nbsp; When this happens, the enamel has two courses\nof action: it can continue to breakdown further (demineralization) and result in\na cavity, or ions\/compounds can bind to damaged enamel to restore the structure\n(remineralization).&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When teeth are formed, the enamel is made up of interlocking\nmolecules called hydroxyapatite.&nbsp; The\nfluoride can replace hydroxide in the molecule to create a stronger substance\ncalled fluorapatite.&nbsp; Fluoride changes\nthe structure of the tooth at a chemical level to make it stronger.&nbsp; Fluorapatite is stronger than hydroxyapatite\nand is less likely to breakdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I hope this post did not stress you out, because it sure stressed me out!\u00a0 I am sorry it was dry and heavy in the sciences. \u00a0I am, ultimately, a scientist and am tasked with the burden of learning the \u201cwhy\u201d behind everything I do.\u00a0 I am going to continue down the fluoride rabbit hole, but I think this is enough information for one blog post.\u00a0 Soon I will address the sources of fluoride and its beneficial and harmful effects.\u00a0 As always, I love your feedback and any additional questions
