{"id":375,"date":"2021-04-15T18:44:12","date_gmt":"2021-04-15T18:44:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.simmonsyoung.com\/PediatricDentalBlog\/?p=375"},"modified":"2021-04-15T18:44:12","modified_gmt":"2021-04-15T18:44:12","slug":"5-tips-to-make-cooking-at-home-easier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.simmonsyoung.com\/PediatricDentalBlog\/5-tips-to-make-cooking-at-home-easier\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Tips to Make Cooking at Home Easier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I love food!\u00a0 I always have, and I always will.\u00a0 It feels good to get that off my chest.\u00a0 My infatuation with food started at an early age and has only grown as I have gotten older and began to cook for my own family.<\/p>\n<p>As a pediatric dentist who has been in practice for several years now, I see firsthand what we consume plays a large role in our oral health.\u00a0 As a mom, this knowledge directs the purchases I make at the grocery store so I can provide my family with healthy snacks and meals.\u00a0 Early in my marriage, my husband and I made it a priority to eat at home.\u00a0 This decision was made for several reasons.\u00a0 Firstly, I was in dental school, and we did not have financial flexibility to eat out on a regular basis.\u00a0 Secondly, we noticed that we did not feel as good after we did eat out.\u00a0 And thirdly, I enjoyed the creative aspect of putting a meal together.<\/p>\n<p>My cooking has evolved over the years.\u00a0 When we were newly married with no children, I did have time to prep a lot of my own vegetables.\u00a0 With two beautiful girls in our lives now, I do not have as much time to meal prep, so I do tend to let the grocery store do some of my prepping for me.\u00a0 When I get home from work, I typically have fifteen to thirty minutes at the very most to put food on the table.\u00a0 Although this sounds impossible, I have found several ways to accomplish this during the week.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Have a plan<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>I create a flexible meal plan of four to five dinners that I can cook throughout the week. I create my plan the night before I go to the grocery store so I can make sure I have everything I need.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Buy prepped or frozen vegetables<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>My children always wanted to be a part of the cooking process in some way. I found it easier and safer with my little ones helping to have the vegetables prepared a head of time.\u00a0 If I had a nickel for every little finger I almost cut off\u2026\u00a0 Also, frozen vegetables were picked at the peak of ripeness and retain many of the health benefits of freshly picked produce.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Defrost your protein ahead of time<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Move your protein from the freezer to the refrigerator the night before you cook to allow it time to defrost.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Find ways to cook using multiple methods at the same time<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>What in the world does that mean?\u00a0 \u00a0I may cook pork chops on the stove while the microwave heats up my rice.\u00a0 While the meat is cooking, I put my salad together.\u00a0 Voila!<\/li>\n<li>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Wash dishes as you cook<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>One of the hardest parts about eating at home is the cleanup.\u00a0 I have found some ways to cut corners.\u00a0 Vegetable steamer bags are a lifesaver for me.\u00a0 Heat up the veggies in the microwave, and throw the bag away.\u00a0 The same goes for slow cooker liners.\u00a0 I also line all my sheet trays with non-stick foil or parchment paper, so I do not have to scrub them clean afterward.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>To start, I wanted to share one of my favorite weeknight meals that cannot be simpler, and my kids enjoy it as well: Salmon with Edamame and Corn.\u00a0 To prepare, I move my salmon from the freezer to the fridge, the night before I cook it.\u00a0 Salmon is one of my favorite proteins because it cooks up so quickly, and it has incredible health benefits.\u00a0 For this recipe I typically use one skillet. I saut\u00e9 the veggies then the salmon. To speed things up, you could cook the veggies and salmon in two separate skillets.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Salmon with Edamame and Corn<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-380 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simmonsyoung.com\/PediatricDentalBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/IMG_0410-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"273\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.simmonsyoung.com\/PediatricDentalBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/IMG_0410-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.simmonsyoung.com\/PediatricDentalBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/IMG_0410-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.simmonsyoung.com\/PediatricDentalBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/IMG_0410-1-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.simmonsyoung.com\/PediatricDentalBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/IMG_0410-1-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.simmonsyoung.com\/PediatricDentalBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/IMG_0410-1-800x1067.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.simmonsyoung.com\/PediatricDentalBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/IMG_0410-1-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Ingredients:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>4 salmon fillets (4 oz each)<br \/>\n1 TBSP of olive oil<br \/>\nJuice of \u00bd lemon<br \/>\nSalt and pepper to taste<\/p>\n<p>1 TBSP of unsalted butter<br \/>\n6 oz of frozen corn (half of a bag)<br \/>\n8 oz of frozen mukimame (half of a bag of frozen shelled edamame)<br \/>\nSalt to taste<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><strong>Directions:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li>Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat and melt the butter.<\/li>\n<li>Add the frozen corn, edamame and salt. Saut\u00e9 for 4 minutes and portion onto four plates or shallow bowls.<\/li>\n<li>Add the olive oil to the skillet. Season the salmon with salt and pepper and add to the hot skillet.<\/li>\n<li>Sear the salmon for four minutes then flip and cook for another two minutes. Squeeze the lemon juice over the salmon and remove from the pan to your plates.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>And there you go!\u00a0 The crisp outside of the salmon is great with the creaminess of the edamame.\u00a0 The tang of the lemon juice balances out the sweetness of the corn.\u00a0 Even though you are using frozen vegetables, this meal tastes so fresh to
