Every year, the panic starts creeping in.\u00a0 Valentines is weeks away.\u00a0 What am I going to do?\u00a0 What Valentine will I send?\u00a0 If I send candy, everyone will wonder, \u201cIs she trying to give my kid cavities?\u201d\u00a0 If I send bubbles, \u201cShe just sends that because she is a dentist and does not believe in candy.\u201d\u00a0 Will other moms send different treats because there is a \u201cdentist\u2019s kid\u201d in the class?\u00a0 I get told by my friends that nobody is thinking about me being a dentist, but every year I experience the same feelings of anxiety.<\/p>\n

Kids eat candy.\u00a0 My kids, like everyone else\u2019s kids, eat candy.\u00a0 All candy is not created equal, and some candy is better for your teeth than others.<\/p>\n

Best\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Worst<\/span><\/h2>\n

Xylitol chewing gum > Sugar Free Candy > Chocolate > Suckers\/Peppermints\/Sticky\/Sour candy<\/p>\n

Chewing Gum with Xylitol<\/span><\/h4>\n

Xylitol is a sugar that the cavity creating bacteria in our mouths does not readily digest.\u00a0 It has even shown to decrease cavity formation when chewed several times a day.\u00a0 An example of a gum with xylitol would be Icebreakers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Sugar Free Candy<\/span><\/h4>\n

Sigh\u2026okay.\u00a0 Sugar free candy won\u2019t be as bad for teeth, but if I am eating candy, let\u2019s just say, it\u2019s not going to be sugar free.<\/p>\n

Chocolate<\/span><\/h4>\n

Candies of the chocolate varieties are by far my personal favorites.\u00a0 Chocolate is delicious, of course, but also it does not stay in the oral cavity for as long of a time as hard candies do.\u00a0 They do not stick to teeth like gummy candies do.\u00a0 The oral environment does not have to work as hard to return to a neutral level as it would with the hard and sticky candies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hard, Sticky, and Sour Candy<\/span><\/h4>\n

Bacteria in your mouth thrive on sugar, and when bacteria digest sugar, its byproduct is acid.\u00a0 Acid produced from the bacteria on your teeth is what destroys enamel and creates a cavity.<\/strong>\u00a0 An increased frequency of consuming sugary candies and\/or beverages can lead to cavities.\u00a0 Candies that stay in your mouth for extended periods of time, i.e. suckers, peppermints, etc, have a higher tendency of creating cavities.\u00a0 Gummy candies, although swallowed quickly, can leave a sticky residue on teeth that is difficult for the saliva to rinse away which can also create cavities.\u00a0 Sour candies are more acidic than other candies which can be damaging to the enamel.<\/p>\n

Despite being aware of these facts, my children are still children and love candy.\u00a0 I was the mom that sent heart-shaped sunglasses for Valentine happies when my kids were in daycare.\u00a0 Now that my children are getting to be school ages, I have started letting them choose their valentines.\u00a0 And what did my children choose this year: RING POPS! *Insert palm to forehead*<\/p>\n

I want the best for my children, but I also want my kids to remember their mom as a fun, loving person who allowed special treats.\u00a0 We need a special treat every now and again.\u00a0 All of this to say, please don\u2019t hate the dentist who sends Ring Pops for Valentine\u2019s Day.\u00a0 My kids made me do it!<\/p>\n
